A word of caution for everybody this winter.

Im from northern ontario, Canada roads like that are normal everyday, so are studded tires :icon_rofl: But man that was close, good job!

If you hit ice just don't hit the brakes and its best not to jerk your foot off the gas either. Hit the brakes and you will slide and letting clear off the gas can cause a slide also. It's usually best to let it go straight and don't try to steer and just let off the gas enough so its not trying to accelerate. If you need to slow down let off the gas very gently and be gentle on the brakes and if it slides give up on the brakes so you can at least attempt to steer. Also try to be looking ahead and keep as much distance as possible from anyone ahead of you and see if they start sliding.

Good info. But sliding it into neutral helps alot, tapping the brakes ever so slightly. Sometimes theres just nothing you can do tho :/

Roads are like that all the time here, and i drive at least 3 hours a day, more if the roads are absolute crap. Lol me and my dad have a business doing deliveries for about 10 resturants in town here, he drives all day, everyday doign about 10 above the limit. This is not a smart idea by any means, but hes taught me a few tricks on how to do what in each situation. No acsidents ecxept from some dumbass that decided to make a left hand turn from a righthand lane when he was being passed by my dad. lol

Basically... drive responsible, pay attension, keep a good distance between ther car infront of you because you never know when the roads are crap. And if worst comes to worse, aim for the snowbank. Beats totaling off 2 cars with you at fault.

ice is ice people....if your in an area where snow tires are not even available due to actual trended climate over the last 20 years...your fawked.

ya know....the corvette thread made me sick....

how anyone could bag on a c5 or later vette is beyond me in the first place, to not be impressed with even the 345 hp version and think a stang or camaro or whatever is better then it for road use is ridiculous. best bang for buck by a long shot.

but theres one fact, and hot rwd car will absolutely suck in the rain or snow with summer tires even with ken block at the helm:dunno:.

no one is capable of driving them effectively in those conditions, or the conditions in this thread.

as for ice, like depicted in the video displayed in this thread, thats the reason i have a 4x4. and i would be using part of the shoulder to maximize my chances of reaching my destinaton. not much you can do when the other guy crosses the line though, with only select stretches looking like that chains would have been useless as well for the most part and likely end up damaging the vehicle or the ones near yours.

with what little was shown here, i can say at that point it was unlikely i would have got myself in that situation, but not knowing that particular truck i cant honestly say that positively....of course i have been driving in much worse conditions my whole life....so i know with pure ice, and regular tires....i am just a passenger no matter what seat i am sitting it.

just the way it is. every car on that road was hoping and praying for the best.

i am just glad ya made it bro, and learned something from it.:icon_thumby:

that could have been pure hell.

Another good point to make. Best to stay out of ruts and the shiny parts (if possible at the time). If your sliding, look to move over to the side a bit where the other cars havent driven as much. There will not be driven on as much and therfore not be as icy (in theory anyways :P not every situation is the same).

Shiny is baaad, white goood... :P

for you people in the southern states that arent used to these conditions....

slow down a minimum of 5mph under the posted speed limit, 10 preferable, leave for your destination early, relax, take your time, THERE IS NO RUSH.

DOUBLE OR TRIPLE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN VEHICLES... give people space, if the driver in front of you spins out you dont want to hit him...goes back to the slow down point..

keep your fuel tank full, when it gets to half-tank,FILL IT! make sure you have boots, gloves, a good jacket (carhart or duluth trading co, you might be under the vehicle in snow, stay dry!) and RECOVERY GEAR, strap, shovel, flashlight, sand or kitty litter, jack, ect.ect.

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE CONDITIONS!!! if it was warm earlier in the day and it cools down, guess what, there is a sheet of ice everywhere, pay attention to conditions..watch the weather!

dont distract yourself, dont awnser the cell phone, dont change the radio, dont eat or shave or whatever, just focus on driving dammit!

and if you have the time, space or oppurtunity to practice driving in crap conditions than by all mean do it! driving in weather like this takes expiriance, i have been doing it my entire life so this doesnt phase me or my wife, we just slow down and pay attention and pass all the people with southern plates in the ditch.. and i would say that by far the worst drivers in winter conditions come from florida...

People need to live by this even under the best driving conditions!!!

I can't stand distracted drivers, Especially the high school kids in mommy or daddys H2 who think that they are invincible and drive like they are the only thing on the road... I'll stop that rant before i catch a ban.

Daven you made a couple good points but if I hit the ice I usually dont put it in neutral because I don't take my hands off the wheel when it gets dicey....I dont wanna take the chance of moving it (the wheel) any lol And yes moving over to one side where there is snow or rougher ice helps. Last week after the big storm I drove back from staying at my brothers house and my back road was a solid sheet of ice two inches thick with a set of ruts right down the middle from a full size that had driven down it the night before before the freezing rain came. I had to stay to one side because the ruts nearly threw me off the road.

Im not exactly sure about the specifics on it, but im pretty sure the only real thing it does is free up the wheels so theres nothing fighting your braking techniques. A usefull thing i do when driving is when i notice that the stop im coming up to might be a bit dicey, i just throw it in nuetral. It does help a bit, and doesnt take long. In my truck which is a standard i usually stop in nuetral anyways, and autos that have the shifter on the steering column is easy to do this with if you start to slide. Autos with the shifter on the floor is a bit anoyign and out of place though. Either way, if you start to slide, throwing it in nuetral does help a bit. And every bit counts.

And oooohhh do i hate ruts... Lol especailly the deep icy ones that grab the rear end when you need to get out. Fun times...

You know living in San Diego is kind of expensive, the gun laws suck out here and trying to get my truck to pass smog every two years isn't fun....but it was 57 this morning when I woke up and this weekend is going to be 70 with a clear blue sunny sky.:thefinger:

Edit: I just double checked the weather report...77 degrees F not 70
