Im on my fourth Ranger in 25 years. (88, 88, 03, 99) Today for the first time I saw one with a side badge “XL”. I’ve always just seen Ranger XLT and plain Ranger. For whatever reason I thought the absence of the XLT meant it was an XL. I looked up trim levels and find XL and XLT. So now I’m curious. What’s the ‘plain’ badge represent? Confused. Thanks.

The plain emblem meant it was base of the base. i think certain years had a "custom" emblem similar to the F series on the base base models.

It goes...
Base/Custom
XL
XLT

I think its rare to see because it didnt take many options to bump it up to an XLT. Ive mostly seen the XL badge on 3rd gens...and the custom badge on 2nd gens.

After 97 i think everything but XLT went away for badging...but i maybe wrong

I think so, i have nothing on my truck but edge on the bed and ranger on the fenders and tailgate

Makes sense. I have just Ranger. 3.0 4wd, crank windows, no ac, no sliding rear window, no pdl. Had to add the pdls and swapped in a lsd. Next is the rear slider to add some ‘ac’. Interesting.

Mine has ac, none of the other stuff though. The edge is an xl with a front bumper

Depends on the model year but for some years in the 80's there was a Ranger "S", the S stood for Strippo. Vinyl seats, 4-speed, manual steering, black window trim and bumpers, 2.0L 4-banger instead of a 2.3L. My cousin had one.

I think Custom replaced XL in Rangers for a couple years.

My 92 STX doesn’t say STX anywhere but on the window sticker, fenders just say Ranger. It confused the insurance people because it’s trimmed out like an XLT but has painted bumpers and grill like an XL. Fortunately previous owners saved the window sticker.

My 2wd 2000 Ranger is another oddball, it’s XLT packaged but the only XLT goodies it got were carpet, cloth seats, A/C and chrome. No cruise, power nothing… got it new off a dealer lot.

The trim packages seemed kind of all over the place sometimes.

Rusty #1 is an XLT with no options besides the woodgrain bezel and cloth seats/carpet

Trim and what badge the truck gets seems to be all over the place.

My 1998 was an XLT, crank windows, manual locks, no A/C, but did have carpet and cloth seats. It had the XLT badge

My 2011 is an XLT and just about everything option wise but cruise control. I had to order the rear slider extra, using the $500 credit/incentive to pay for it. It has the XLT badge. I believe the Sport model is the same since I don't think there was anything higher than XLT for the Ranger towards the end of the original small truck line's life.

My 2019 has STX badges because of the package, otherwise it would have XL on the fender "vents".

I guess it is up to Ford's mood and what the marketing department is pushing at the time as to what badging the Ranger got/gets.

my 04 has rubber floor, manual trans, manual windows, manual locks, cool front bumper, and had a cd/am/fm radio with 6 speakers. it does have the front and rear sway bars and 4.10 gears though

my 24, which says stx also but is really an xl with an appearance package, has carpet, locking rear locker, tow hitch, and spray in bed liner. otherwise, its just got the basics in it
