WTF? No mention of the significance of this date on MSNBC, that I saw... Hell, I'm a vet, and didn't even know that it was D-Day. For some reason I thought it was in December - dang-it, I'm gettin' my dates all fouled up.
No excuses here... I went to Catholic schools.

I know all about D-day. It interested me and still does by how we were able to overtake that stretch of beach against a fully prepared German army.

If you look into things, the German army was far from fully prepared. Of course, had Rommel had his way, the entire coast would still be in the process of being fortified.... Rommel understood the weakness of piling everything up on the coast and wanted a defense-in-depth with the highly mobile Panzer divisions at his command. Hitler had other plans.

That said, it still was not an easy objective to capture from the Germans, no matter how poor the preparation on their part, Rommel had still managed to erect enough of a defense network that it was a real challenge to capture the beachheads and expand them.

Theres a surprising amount of information out there about it, I've read some stuff that seemed to have very little to do with D-day but ended up holding some interesting nuggets of information. Case in point, I read a book on midget submarines... how many of you knew that the Normandy beaches were scouted by British midget subs and crew? They took soil samples, measured things, all under the noses of the Germans.

History tends to repeat itself. Most schools make it boring and oppressive from what I've seen, get a few books from the library and start reading, most of the books I've read on the subject have been much more interesting than any history classroom I've been in.

You know... I just thought of something.

You know how www.google.com usually has some picture or something that is pertinent to the day if there is something special about it?

Today it has a picture of a theatre stage w/ actors... If you hover your mouse over it you will see it read "Diego Velazquez"...


Now, I think D-DAY is WAY more memorable than some spaniard...


What about yall??? I think a complaint or at least a question to Google should be submitted for not remembering a significant day in our history.

I think that is a real to all of those who took part in WWII, or any war involving this country for that matter. Actually, it's a real slap in the face to anyone involved in WWII in any country. To ignore such a major event that changed so many people's lives forever...

Every year here they have a big military display of restored cars, trucks and such. Kind of weird passing one or two "Duce's" with a 105 pulled behind it.

I know how to get Boggins interested in D-Day. I've seen my Grandson playing a video game about the assault on Omaha beach. The player had to hit the beach running, avoid getting shot, and take out an enemy machine gun nest. I can't remember the title.

I am utterly disgusted by your attitude. I have very little respect for today's children already. This just proves to me that none of them care about anything other that themselves. School is VERY important. Not only because it is required as part of society today, but because it is the only defense against the epidemic of IGNORANCE running rampant through the world these days.

If you took that personally, good. Do something to better your situation. Study, do well in school, you're only what, 13? You have a LONG way to go before you can be so apathetic.

My dad was a Warrant Officer (NCO) and was offered the Rank of Commissioned Officer status before he retired (can't remember if it was Sargeant or Captain) and I heard many stories of him in England. He was a tail gunner for the RCAF flying S&R missions over the North Sea...not sure if he actually saw any action but he never talked much about it...other than his adventures of getting drunk and getting into fights...

The only story I can recall was when he was in Nassau and his buddy got into a fight with another guy and they both ended up in jail for the night. When my dad went to pick him up he said to the guy "you're gonna have to thank the guy you were in a fight with" and when the friend said "no way" my dad told him that if he wasn't in jail that night he would have died. His crew went out on a routine flight and never came back...

There were others though...that one just stands out right now...

OH, on topic...because my dad was Air Force and not Army like they were divided years ago, he didn't remember June 6th so much as August 6th and August 9th...the days they bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki...

That is sad, this was a very major event.

I am a history nut, especially WWII vehicles (planes, ships, tanks...)

nobody should learn history unless they want to. What is the point? History has proven that if we don't remember history, we are doomed to repeat it. History has proven that Mankind has always forgot history lessons.

For example of the resurgence of the holocaust deniers. I too am a history buff(American and religious History) I do fear that if the Lord's willing, we come to the hundredth anniversary of WW2, it will mean nothing more than a typical "columbus day" in America.
