Hey all, I have recently been noticing my steering is a little loose on center. It feels fine below about 30mph, but much faster than that and it gets a little hard to control, and like it is very affected by bumps. I was wondering what could cause this. Also I have the U-Joint steering joint, and the boot which is supposed to cover it is completely torn and its not covered at all. Is this going to cause big problems, or is it something which needs to be addressed quickly?

Any help would be great.

Thanks,

-Chris

I wondered if that would get anyone to look into this... The outer tie rods seem fine... maybe I should look into the inners. I ran the truck into a storm drain, while sliding with my foot on the brake, about 4 years ago. It broke a bunch of stuff, wheels did a this... /\. And it hasn't been the same since. I'll look a little more into this... Thanks

Well, got under it yesterday, everything is nice and tight like it should be... so i dunno. Anyway, I thought I would bump this thread up and see what you all thought about the steering shaft u-joint boot being torn? Is it something I need to be worried about?

have you checked your rag joints?

I have the same problem.

Yo,
Are you getting any vibrations or pulling? You may also check your wheel bearings. (jack up one tire, grab it and try and wiggle it back and forth, it should be tight with no play.)

adjust the steering box. steering on center loosen nut, turn screw in until it bottems out( don't over tighten) back out screw 1/8 of of a turn and tighten nut

I have the same issue but I choose to ignore it and pretend it will go away.... Because I'm sure its a very expensive fix

I saw a guy with a 2000 say he had the same issue.........Seems like this is a common issue for the 1998-2000 rangers
