Since I used white out on my crank mark it's been really easy to see when checking the timing...so I was wondering...

I thought it would be a good idea to mark the timing belt and the cam sprocket with a dab of white out when they are aligned...providing the belt doesn't break outright, I should be able to check if the timing belt has skipped a tooth or threeth just by checking to see if the dots line up...

Thought it might help someone else out...anyone see any problems with this or have you done this???

Count the number of teeth on the belt and the number of teeth on the cam sprocket. If the number of teeth on the sprocket does not divide exactly into the number of teeth on the belt it won't work.

Ah....that would affect the master plan...lol...

I might try it anyway...it's bound to be right at least one every thousand or so revolutions...

on near almost every vehicle this would never work as the cams need to spin at 1/2 that of the crankshaft, and therefore needing to have different size sprockets. thus creating a differentiation in which tooth on the cam will land on any give notch in the belt

i just set the crank to TDC and remove to cam inspection plug. don't have a plug? remove the timing cover.

Very true...I wasn't quite thinking this through...

Yes, I usually use the plug method to set the timing...that was, of course, after I actually put a cover on it...
