Hello, First off thanks for taking the time to read this as I hope I put it in the correct section. I am nearing completeion of my wife's truck (1972 Ford F100 Shortbed 2wd) and just have a few decisions to make that I have been putting off until last. The truck has a 3.70 rear end ratio in it and came with a 2 barrel 302 and 3 speed on the column. I removed said engine and tranny as the engine was shot and the 3 speed with that rear end ratio was turning the motor a little over 3 thousand at just 60 mph. Not good enough for the area we live in as occasionally we do need to interstate drive. I have purchased an AOD automatic transmission and have just finished putting together a fresh 300 six cylinder engine (81 model engine). I have purchased an offenhauser 6019 Dual Plane 4 barrel intake for said engine and the Hooker header with dual exaust setup. I am going to run dual 2 1/4 inch pipes with two quiet mufflers (the truck had a glasspack when we bought it and sounded horrible). :icon_surprised:My question is does anyone have a reccomendation as to a carb size? The only other truck I have in this model range is my one ton which has a 390 big block so nothing to compare to. (If it were up to me this one would have another 390 as well, but she wanted economical). :lame:I have been steered to a 600 cfm Holley square bore carberuator which sounds big to me considering I run a 650 double pumper on my 390. Keep in mind this is a bone stock except it has been bored .030 over 300 six cylinder. Is the square bore carb in 600 cfm's a good choice? I'm looking for economy over power on this project as it is strictly for weekend cruising. Any thoughts or tech advise would be greatly appreciated as carbs are over $300 each and I want to be happy with my purchase.

Thanks,:icon_bounceblue:

if your 8-8.5 to 1 390 cfm 4bbl depending on cam.

i have seen modded versions of these in built 300 broncos holley 14844-060

takes some tweakin but they run well with them if the compression is bumped with the good head

Cool, that is more along the lines of what I was thinking. The cam in this engine is a direct stock replacement. It is 8.5 to one compression, unless it gained some when they shaved the head at the machine shop. He said he took approx. .080 off of it when he was surfacing it to get it good and flat, apparently it had been hot somewhere along the line and the head was misshapen. I just did a part number search with the 14844-060 and didn't turn anything up at Summitracing.com. Is there something else I should be looking under to find this 390 cfm unit? Thanks again for the help.

Derek

I did find a Holley 0-8007 carb that is listed as 390 cfm's. It is listed as:
Brand Holley
Manufacturer's Part Number 0-8007
Part Type Carburetors
Product Line Holley Model 4160 Adjustable Float Carburetors
Summit Racing Part Number HLY-0-8007

Number of Barrels 4
Carburetor Flange Square bore
Choke Electric
Fuel Gasoline
Secondary Type Vacuum
New or Remanufactured New
Fuel Inlet Single
CFM 390
Carburetor Finish Dichromate
Ford Kickdown Yes
Throttle Linkage Type Universal
Quantity Sold individually.

Does this sound like the carb that you would reccommend? It sells for around $350 so that sounds like exactly my price range. Thanks again for the input.

the other number is for a 450 marine application. its a neat setupfor hard 4x4 use off road when matched up right.

seen them run on 10-11 to 1 engines that were quite impressive.

the key is making sure you keep the proper amount of heat within the manifold for proper atomizaton on a street/offroad rig.

Cool, well I definately appreciate the info. I will probably be purchasing one here shortly, I was especially leaning toward the electric choke option. My original plan was to do EFI on this truck, but extreme cost drove me away. Hopefully this will be a pretty trouble free carb setup. Women and badly tuned carbs don't mix, I can't tell you how many calls I got about the previous engine/tranny setup "acting funny" or "sounding funny". Thanks again, and happy holidays!

i would eather use a 2 bbl 2100 autolite off of a early 302 with a adapter plate or if i had to have a 4bbl would use a 4100 autolite like came on early mustangs thes carbs when right work realy good and are trouble free with good millage to boot, never saw a holley that didnt leak at least alitle::

if you have a wrecking yard nearby you can get most or all the parts for efi cheap and by the way any way you set it up inline six is not going to be economical gas wise they are built for torque not speed or economy.
