A few A4LD to M5OD questions

Ok, another question (answered the last one myself).

I am out trying to get everything together so I can take it to my cousin's tomorrow morning where he's going to help me put the tranny in (he works at a tranny shop). I got down my list to the wire harness. I see the connector that plugs into the top of the tranny ( on the Explorer) where it comes out of a wire loom. The only problem is, is that it continues down, and between the frame and the gas tank.

I have not cut into the harness yet to see if I can just take a couple of the wires. Figured I'd post up here first, and get an answer alittle sooner (I am headed out to cut the harness open right now).

Oh, and I REALLLYY don't want to get under the Explorer.. It's outside, it's raining, and the thing is sitting in a giant puddle about 3 inches deep.

EDIT: Ok, the two wires that go to the plug I need go into a 4-wire plug up in the engine bay. But the other two wires in that plug (pink w/ black, and black w/ yellow) continue from the plug in the engine bay, on past the tranny, and down beside the gas tank and I lost them from there.

Time to learn to use a wire diagram!!

EDIT #2: Will the truck start, and move without connecting any of the wires to the tranny? They are all just related to the backup lights, right? Since me, and my ranger will be 20 miles away form the parts Explorer, it'd be nice to just get it to the point that I can get it home, and then worry about all the little stuff once I have the parts rig next to it.

is it like the connector on the left?if i remember right my truck has three plug ins for down there.one each for fuel, lights, and tranny.the 92 harness incorporated two of them together and i don't remember which. if you turn on the ignition and the pump primes then the fuel isen't in that plug.

:icon_thumby:don't cut the wires,if you use a pick you can remove the red keeper in plug and then pull out the wire by depressing the barb.thats if you can't just plug it in and run it

Ok, got another question/ problem.

So, my question is, instead of taking a bracket out of a truck at a wrecking yard, and delaying my swap yet another week, is there any reason why I could not just swap the pedals??
any luck with that?

Yeah, the pedals came right off the Explorer's bracket, and slipped right onto mine!!

The plugs on my Ranger look like that, but not the Explorer (the bigger, square plug doesn't anyway)..
There are two connectors, one is an 8-wire plug that is round on the outside, but the contacts are in 2 rows of 4 inside. And the other is just a little round, 4 wire connector (this is all on the Explorer). and on the Ranger, they look just liek the ones you showed.

Well, I guess I just do the swap, and if nothing else I get my cousin to drive me to his dad's wrecking yard and I hack off the wiring I need from a 93 Ranger. I'll try the pick method though.

I'm sure I'll have a few wireing question to post up here throughout the day.

Well, I think I grabbed every piece of wiring that might have had to do with the tranny. There was a harness that went next to the intake manifold that I snagged, and I just cut the connector off of the computer-side of the large two connectors that went down by the tranny.

Ok, well I got the swap done, basicly, without too many problems wiring-wise.
I got the backup lighst working properly, and that's about it...

The plug for the clutch safety switch is different on my Ranger than it was on the Explorer, so I left the jumper in there. And my second problem was making 4low work... I have looked at the swap article in the Tech Library, and also the A4ld-FM146 swap that is stickied. Neither have really help me with that. I've looked at my Haynes manual, and it shows nothing about the 4wd control module or any of it's wiring, ANYWHERE.

While I was under there, I figured I'd hollow out my Cat converters since I have a spare pair from the Exploder. So I basicly have straight pipes now. Hollowed cats, and the muffler was cut off (mufflers been cut off for a long time, got hung up on a rock offroad, and it's cool that way). There is no question that I'm going to put the Explorers cats on it. The sound is absolutally horrible! Loud is cool, but this isn't only louder, it has an abnoxious tone to it. Somewhat like a V8 at an idle, but much over that it sounds like a Geo Metro with a fart can.. No wait, worse.

i know this is a REALLY OLD POST. but for refrence to anyone searching these posts looking for info the electric t-case has to see that the clutch pedal is depressed, or that the trans is in neutral to engage 4lo
