Hello Everyone,

Background
I got my 2001 Ranger Edge over the summer and had no problems until about a month ago. First thing that happened is it stopped starting. (got this fixed turned out the ground to the started had gone bad) fine... Next the speedometer started bouncing around over the speed of 40 and if i had the radio turned up. (this still is not fixed)

So the real issue im having now is the 4x4 system. I live in a northern state and the roads are horrible without 4x4.

The Issue
When i turn the knob to engage the 4high or the 4low I hear a click over on the passenger side (like it always did) but it would click twice and the 4x4 light would turn on. Now it will click once and a minute or so later make the same click but it will not go into 4x4.:annoyed:

Also... I know that the light does work (turns on with the vehicle start).

Thanks for any help guys!

id check your lockers. sounds like they are not engaging.
put front end up on jack stands and put the truck in 4x4.
this was you can turn the wheel and see if the shaft is moving.

but thats my idea, i may not be right

Ok so heres an update to see if anyone has any more suggestions...
I brought it to the mechanic and he tried putting in a new (what he called) four wheel drive brain (or computer) and it still clicked (thats the part that was making the clicking sound - or at least where it seemed to be coming from) that did nothing. So next plan of action was to go under and try the 4x4 motor. He said that was making funny noises and bound up so he put in a new one for me. Still no 4x4... so he checked the switch, the grounds, fuses and everything else he said he could think of checking. Still no 4x4.

Any ideas?

01 = gay vacuum operated hubs..

first thing i would check for is a ripped off vacuum line

Sighs....

2000 and later trucks have a live axle. There are no hub locks on the front end. They front axle shafts are permanently attached to each wheel.

Something is wrong with the shift motor most likely.

Pull it off and clean it... See the tech library or the FAQ at the top of the forum for help!

Sorry for my complete lack of knowledge here... but....

Is this the same as the 4x4 motor? The mechanic said he put a new one in there for me.
