My a/c unit doesn't work and I think I just want to get rid of it. The way I see it, I don't feel like I need it and the belt will have one less component to spin. Questions: can I just use a non-ac belt after removing it? Will I also need to replace the heater box?

If you have a belt diagram that shows belt routing w/o a/c I would think it would work fine. No need to change the heater box or anything else besides the belt.

yep, just get the non A/C belt. shouldn't need a new heater box, just leave th evap core in it and you will be fine.

it isn't much weight and personally I wouldn't think it is worth the extra effort and time to remove it vs. letting it just stay in there, as the thing doesn't put that much extra weight.

Removing the big hose might be difficult as Ford has intertwined that hose with the other plumbing and wiring harness quite well (at least on the 4.0 ohv) but the rest of the A/C should be pretty easy to remove.

I pulled the a/c compressor and condenser out of my ranger, I don't think it even took an hour. Like the others have said, you just need to use a non-a/c belt. Removing it dose make working on everything else easier, lots more room.
