A/C compressor

Hey guys, first time posting. I just bought a 99 ranger xlt, 4.0, 4wd and I've noticed that the a/c compressor will kick on every few seconds and then kick off a few seconds later. Is this a common problem with this generation and if anyone has had this problem before, is there an easier or cheaper way to fix it than to replace the compressor? Thanks to all who reply.

In the summer that would be a sign of a low charge.

This time of year, if it is just on with the defroster, it might be normal.
