99 to 93 4.0 engine compatiblity help

engine compatiblity help

I have a 99 explorer with the OHV 4.0, the motor is toast, I found a 93 explorer that has the OHV 4.0 in it and wanna swap the motors. Basically what i'm trying to figure out is: What issues will i run into? Will my computer work on a 93 engine, will i need to swap anything over from the old motor or need to get different engine wiring?? Thanks for any help you can give.

basically swap everything except the block and heads to the new motor. that will cover any issues. also i believe they are a different timing... check on that.

Thanks for the help. Also for 100 bux i can get the engine wiring harness and the computer for the 93. Would that pretty much solve any issues and make this engine a quick drop in and go?
 
you'd run into more problems trying to convert the 99 to run a 93 engine than the other way around. one major issue you may have is the fact that the later blocks have more bosses on the sides for engine mounts, chances are you may not be able to bolt your engine mount plates to the engine. Look for a 95+ engine to get all of the bosses you'd need.

damn alright, ill probably stay away from that motor then and just wait for another 97 - 99 to come around again
 
What just a sec, I have been on vacation and missed this one. OK so the 99 is the same as the 93. I just took a 97 explorer motor and put it into my 93 ranger. All you have to do is the reverse I did. Take the motor mounts( check the 93 to make sure it has the 5 extra holes), intake plenum, exhaust man,and check the oil pump while you have the motor out, better yet just spent the $89 on a new oil pump, timing set( differents in 93 uses the nub on the back of the crank gear and the 95-99 use the key slot.
Then again the heads on the 97 are better than the 93, lots of info in the tech library on this one.

The 93 block wont have the right bosses for the 99 motor mount brackets.

You can drill 1 hole in the drivers side bracket to mate it up to the 93 block. 2 of the holes already line up.

The pass side only 1 hole will line up and there is no room to drill the other 2 holes in the bracket to fit to the block.

I made a plate years ago to fit an older block to the newer mounts, let me see if I can find a pic.
