Im working on a 99 sport 4.0 sohc 4x4, its been sitting with a bad trans for a year and a half. Finally got the trans replaced but now no fuel, the pump does not run when the key is turned on. Checked the inertia switch its not tripped, fuses all good, and switched out relays. So im thinking PATS system any suggestions before the dealer? :annoyed:

Have you checked for power to the pump? Unplug the pump itself and see if it is getting power. It's possible the pump went bad while sitting. It does happen.

No actually i have not lol, checked for power everywhere else. I just knew that fords PATS is common for losing communication with the key, but i tried both keys and nothing so guess i will check pump power tomorrow.

Easy way to check is at the inertia switch.
Note that it will only have power for about 3 seconds each time the key is turned from Off to Run.

I'm pretty sure the PATS will not allow the starter to crank on a 99. Plus, the Theft light will flash.

Another quirk of most Fords is that the PCM relay has to work for the fuel pump relay to work. You'll know the PCM relay is inop if when you turn the key to Run, the CEL will not light up.

The inertia switch connector is also a handy place to inject power to the fuel pump. I would do that before I messed around getting to the pump itself. Put 12v to the PK/BK wire. I use one of those battery jump start boxes for that. If you just run a hot wire from B+, you won't have to worry about grounding your external power source.

.

what he said^^^^^^^^..for what it's worth...Haynes manual shows pats wired into the starter......see if it fires up with starter fluid in the TB!

It will run or starting fluid, it has power at one wire on the inertia switch, i will try putting power to it tomorrow and see what happens.

Ok put power to the pink/black wire, it just sparked hard and didnt run at all. So i guess chevk for bare wires then drop tank.
