i have an opertunity to pick up a wrecked 99 sd 4wd for the axles, only problem is its leaf sprung, and that won't work for me, because i'll be moving it ahead 6 inches on the front of my 97 ranger along with the fact i dont readily have a welder to fab up a four-link. my friend has a 69 chevy 2wd, with an original trailing arm setup u-bolted to the leaf spring perches on the rear end. curious if anyone has heard doing this on a front axle, with a track-bar to locate side-to-side movement. or would i be better off waiting for an 05+ sd with factory radius arms?

not sure what youre asking. so you want to wait to put a coil sprung sd axle cause you dont want to have to do fab work on the leaf sprung sd axle?

basically, because i don't really have any decent place to work on it over an extended time as fabbing up a link suspension... On the other hand, i mentioned about my friends trailing arm suspension, which would be similar to a radius arm setup, except it would be bolted to the axle with u-bolts?

The '05up axles are wider (72.5" WMS or somewhere thereabouts). The radius arms (mounts) should make it easier to set it up with a coil suspension though. The '05up axles are also 35 spline all the way through. If the extra width isn't a problem (or if you plan to narrow it a bit), I'd probably look for an '05up set.

The Chevy style setup I don't see working up front as it's not practical to bring the ends of the arms closer together (like how it is under the Chevy) so they aren't trying to twist the axle housing like a big huge swaybar when it tries to flex.

If the 99 is a SRW then the front is a D50. If its a DRW then its a D60. I believe its after 03 all front super duty axles are 60's.

Im running an 04 super duty 60 and 99 10.5 in my rig with leafs all the way around.

FYI, Dana 50 straight axle, everything is the same as the 60 but the gear set, diff and inner shafts. 50 tappers down to 30 spline at diff, 9" ring gear and diff to match. 60 is 35 spline inner, 9.75" ring gear and diff to match.

Actually I am pretty sure 86+ F-350's had 60's.

Dad's '80 F-350 has the TTB 50, only problem he has had is catching the hubs on stuff and breaking them. In close to 20 years employees have killed two hubs that way... otherwise no issues at all.

everything in this post is correct-i've used the 99 d50 in mud trucks with 44 boggers and had them stay together, but there was always that fear in the back of my mind about the tapered down axles.their main advantage is that they are cheap and plentifull:icon_thumby:

The key thing is Super Duty axles.

99 and newer are all metric bolt pattern, ball joint, unit bearing 50 and 60 fronts with sterling 10.5 rears.
