Howdy all,

Got myself a shiny new 96 Ranger back in the day - first new vehicle I ever had.
Cayman green, 2.3 5spd XL, nothing fancy but I drove the wheels off it until I finally sent it to the wrecker in 2015.
During that time, I relied on a lot of the expertise and opinion on this very forum to keep it alive through half a dozen sets of tires, 3 clutches, more brakes & oil changes than I care to count...
Sadly, my old login info suffered a similar fate: I don't even recall what my username was.

Anyway, I've missed driving the thing so I picked up a '99 4X4 as a project.
The interior and body are pretty good - the tailgate and bed mounts have some rot but I can deal with that.
It needs an engine & the one I'm putting in is from a 2000 Explorer (OHV).
Any fitment issues I need to look out for ?

Here are all the different engines available in a 1999 Ranger.

2.5L (VIN C, 8th digit, 4-153)
3.0L, VIN U (8th digit, gasoline, 6-183), from 7/27/99
3.0L, VIN U (8th digit, gasoline, 6-183), thru 7/26/99
3.0L, VIN V (8th digit, flex fuel, 6-183), from 7/27/99
3.0L, VIN V (8th digit, flex fuel, 6-183), thru 7/26/99
4.0L (VIN X, 8th digit, 6-245), EGR, Federal emissions
4.0L (VIN X, 8th digit, 6-245), EGR, low emissions
4.0L (VIN X, 8th digit, 6-245), w/o EGR; Federal emissions
4.0L (VIN X, 8th digit, 6-245), w/o EGR; low emissions

I picked a 4.0 VIN X EGR Federal emissions and some 2000 engines did come up from an explorer.

If you want to check yourself, go to www.car-part.com

Thanks for checking that.
I wish I had the vin from the donor but it was long gone by the time I got the engine.

Superficially it looks the same and I can swap over what I need from the original engine so it's not too big a deal.

Thanks for the link, I'll add it to my resource file !
