Hey guys new to the forum here. I have a quick question though for all you ranger gurus haha. I have the chance to buy a 1999 ranger 4x4 with the 4liter, but it has the axle code "96" which i searched and it says its a open diff. My question is why would ford say their truck is a 4x4 and have an open diff?lol Also, what are some quality, yet in expensive lockers out there?

An open differential is something entirely different from a 4x4.

The 4x4 denotes that it has a transfer case that will power both the front and rear axle when selected. This power is transfered to the differential, which can be open, limited slip, or fully locked.

With an open differential the the power will still travel to all wheels, until one of them begins to slip; at which point that wheel will recieve all of the power.

Not sure if that answer your question, but if not I can try again.

^^nah..I think you just about covered it. lol.

For that axle, cheapest locker would be a Lock-Right/Lock-Rite. Right about $350 or so for it. It'll go right in place of the open spider gears. Do you really want a locker? Why? That's your only option that doesn't require a full carrier swap(muchos buckos...$600-1200 plus install which a novice shouldn't do).

i just dont understand why ford would put an open diff in a 4x4 lol, and as far as the locker goes i just quickly typed that up and was pretty tired so i just said a locker. I was thinking of going with an auburn pro series posi unit(which i have in my s10), but was just seeing if there was a cheaper unit available. The auburn ran me 800 installed thru my fathers friends truck shop.
