Hi folks, hope everyone is having a great Saturday. I just finished up installing a new clutch, master and slave cylinder on my truck. It took me about 2 weeks to install a new clutch. Took it out on a test drive and noticed a shimmy when I turned. The shimmy is worse on a right hand turn than a left. Power steering pump had always been loud but it may be a tad louder now. My question is what is causing this? Pump or something more sinister? I guess with all the banging and jerking trying to reinstall the transmission I could have knocked something loose or maybe the sitting for a couple of weeks could have done something. Thanks for any help provided and Roll Tide!

That was a close game. Looks like we will be playing Notre Dame in the BCS title game.

The shimming or jerking also happens when turning the wheel at a stop not just when moving. I am thinking pump--the fluid is blackish and smells kind of burnt. I sucked the old out and added new mercon atf--it is more reddish now but jerking is still present.

Is this the wheel just shaking or is there a ride vibration to go along with it?

If the wheel is doing it's own thing there may be an air pocket in the system.

It's a common issue with the rack & pinion. It sucks in air when the wheels are of the ground. Happens to every other ranger or exploder I put on a lift at work.

In park, hold it at about 2500 rpm, hold the steering wheel at full lock left for 5 seconds, turn it to the right then hold it on the lock there for 5 seconds. Then do it again.

That's the quick way to bleed the air from the rack.

Thanks fellows, it shimmies or jerks in the wheel when turning. You can see the shimmy in the wheels themselves when turning the wheel from outside. I will try to get the air out.

It is kind of funny that it needed bleeding. i have spent hours trying to bleed the clutch, now got air in my steering. if i ever meet the ford engineer that designed that funky clutch master cylinder i may just kick him in the balls.

If you have everything out of the truck like you did the best thing to do it put the MC and SC together, turn it all upside down, and bleed it. Then disconnect the line, put it all in the truck, and pump the pedal about 20 times.

Yeah, I had the new master cylinder bled before I put it in. All the bleeding took place prior to buying a new clutch MC, they are impossible to bleed once installed because the angle they sit and the fact all the lines attach on the bottom. I had some success pushing the MC into the engine compartment then inverting it and working the plunger. Decided to go ahead and buy another one to install since I already had everything else detached. My truck has 210,000 miles on it and as far as I know it was the original clutch, Not Bad.

I even tried removing the plunger but the limited area to work under the dash made this almost impossible. There is a video posted in several discussions but I am not sure how that guy removed the snap ring under the dash--he must be magic or something.

Got the steering shimmy resolved using the instructions above, took about four times back and fourth. I had it on jack stands for about 2 weeks while working on the clutch so I guess air got introduced from having the front suspension extended so long. Thanks for your help.

The new master comes with a push rod that is not to be clipped in until fully installed. Bleed it w/ a P3 screwdriver, outside the truck with the new slave attached.

Glad to hear the steering is fixed. So many people freak out about such a simple thing.

I got the clutch all buttoned up. I was kind of freaked out about the steering thanks for the info. I don't mind working on the truck but after spending all the time and money on new clutch I want a break....
