been working on a engine swap from a 1999 4.0 ranger into a 1999 ranger that had a 3.0 i have swaped so fare the whole trans due to the 3.0 trans not having a output speed sensor for the 4.0 harness have everything hooked up but pats disabled me with a b2139 code mismach error so i desided it could be the bcm or lock cyclinder and key so i swaped them from the donor and now i get a code b1601 incorrect key. any one else run into this ???? and if so whats a fix or is there a way to reprograme the key

maddragon1:

You need the PATS module from on top of the passenger's air bag.

I am assuming you are using the key from the 4.0. (Swapping tumblers is relatively easy if you have keys).

omg i didnt think anything about pats being a diff part i assumed pats was linked into the gem module and did not think it would be a diff module. thats explains my mismatch errors and key errors. ok so ill swap the 4.0 pats module into the 3.0 ranger and should work. i already have the 4.0 ecp bcm and lock cyclinder so in theory if all computers are for the 4.0 then i should start correct ???

Let's ensure we are talking same things.

GEM (Generic Electronic Module) is in dash beside radio; and has nothing to do with engine.

PCU (Powertrain Control Unit) is in firewall (from engine side) and must match the engine/transmission
PATS (Passive Anti Theft System) is in dash over passenger's airbag.

If PATS, PCU and key are from same vehicle, vehicle should start.

Correct. He needs the PATS module and key from the same vehicle. GM is easy...simple capacitor to bypass...

I'll take my stupid 2 different keys (93) over PATS any damn day. lol

Regularly put the ign key in the door lock (if cold and raining) and vice-versa (if near 0 F). lol

don4331 thanks
to get it running i did have to change the pats module aswell as the emc bcm and the lock cylinder. shes running now just got to finush up the little stuff
