99 4x4 ranger xlt

the cv axle boot tore and threw grease everywhere. i replaced it and the hub bearing at same time. After i put it together everytime i hit a bump i hear a clunking sound and i lost the locking hub was missing. i jacked it up and grabbed the axle from behind and the axle is really loose. I pulled it apart and when i put in the retaining clip I hear it click in but axle is still loose. dont know what to do. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
