I am gathering parts for my son's 99 Ranger swap project. I plan to use a 99 Explorer ECU and harness but am having difficulty locating a 4r70w locally. The local yard has a 4r70w in a 2006 F150 with 4.2. I know that will bolt up but are the electronics different in that year? I have not found a conclusive guide to 4r70ws after 99 and their differences.

Thanks

Where are you located? I have a 99 2wd 4r70 that I pulled from my donor explorer and is taking up space.

On the off chance you have a reason to come anywhere near here, I'll give you the transmission I've got.

Does anyone know if a 99 Mustang v6 4r70w will work with the Explorer ecu?

yes it will work as long as its pre 2004 they changer the output speed sensor and the drum that it reads internally (i made that mistake on my 99 swap) hope that helps

I may have missed something - why is a Mustang V6 transmission in the conversation?

Because V8 mustangs from 1999 were for Mod motors not Windsor pattern

So what was the outcome of using a newer trans? Would it not shift correctly or at all?

I totally forgot the Mustang V6 back then was a 3.8 with the 5.0 bolt pattern. Carry on!

hit a limiter at 30 mph and basically did what seamed like a ignition cut. but did work if I unplugged the output speed sensor that lead me to do more reading on the tranny's so its just easier to get the right tranny in the first place. currently have a 99 f150 4.2 tranny in it..

I discovered yesterday the that Explorer harness does not plug in to the speed sensor on the Mustang trans. The connector is different, Mustang looks like an EV6 injector plug and Explorer is totally different. My question is does the polarity of the sensor matter? I can use the Mustang plug but the wire colors don't match and I don't know how to tell the difference.

Hi what year is your transmission because they changed the plug and the length of the sensor when they changed the drum inside that they read

How far is Roanoke from the Virginia/N.Carolina line? I may be in the Charlotte area soon, and will have the time to travel north a bit. IO could help you get it out of your way, if it is still available.

I'm about three hours from Charlotte. It's still sitting in the storage unit if you want it.
