Does anyone know if the power steering pump lines from a 98 exploder will work with the 90 ranger steering box? ( The fittings that go into the steering box) I want to get the lines from the exploder since they dont have all those stupid bends in them. I think I threw out the ones from my 98 mountaineer I got the engine from and Im sure that got crushed already the scrap yard just wanted the fuel tank before it was smushed.

My local Napa took a new line that fit my Thunderbird pump, cut the other end of the hose and crimped on a new hose end that had the fitting for my steering box. Fairly expensive for what it was, but worth it in the end.

My napa store is a joke they never have anything in stock I need or fancy equipment. I went to a one of the places that makes hoses and for liability reasons they wont cut and put a new end on I got a few places to try still. I did try to drill out the old fitting from the ranger line and flare that end but I didnt have time to mess with it too much

Napa had me cut the hose to the length I needed. The hose end they crimped on was just a normal hydraulic hose end that all Napa's carry.

If a 98 Explorer is rack and pinion steering the pump flow and pressure may not work right on your recirculating ball box.

Can the power steering pump from the 90 2.3 ranger be mounted to the exploder accessory brackets? I just haven't spent any time looking into that.

I'm not sure if the pump will fit the newer bracket but I suspect it will. There's apt to be someone here who's used the later pump and could tell you for sure if it would work. The original pump would have been a C2 pump which Ford released in 78, they were rebuildable by mechanics and easy to work on but unfortunately they were/are usually noisy. I like Mercon III spec transmission fluid best for p/s fluid, Mercon V isn't as slippery

You would think that would be common knowledge on here a 98 pump wouldn't work with a 90 box considering the amount of guys that use the exploder accessory brackets. But I could be wrong

Im gonna try it and then we can post it for all to see.

The PS pump from a 98 Explorer 5.0 is different. Looks more like the one from a SOHC 4.0.

The 5.0 pump is a Cardone 20277, the 4.0 pump is a 20279. I have used a 20279 with a recirculating gear box and had it work. If you can get lines made it should work.

I got an exploder line cut off the box end and then drilled out the old fitting from my old rusted out ranger pressure line so the 3/8 line will fit in and flared it. Withe the same kind of flare as the old line if it leaks im out 6 bucks ill mess with it tomorrow some more

Video I used to convert mine to Volvo and ditch the belt driven squealing pig:

If you do decide to go with one, the pump side fitting thread size is metric 16x1.5 with a flare. I wound up using 16x1.5 o ring with 6 wraps of blue monster thread tape. I should have preserved the hard line from the donor, but I messed it up when I pulled the pump.

Oh, and he talks about rhe Mazda 3 pump as well. It's slightly different than the Volvo - instead of a 12v sense wire for activation, it uses a alternator sense wire that rubs directly back to your alternator. Super simple.
