ok ok before anyone says, change spped sensor,i already did lol

heres the scoop,i bought the truck,no speedo, abs light on,check engine light too, hard shifting from first then o/d light flashes read forums, said change sensor on rear dif,did that,no change.well today i figured i might as well dig deeper.so i cawled under truck and found 2 electrical plugs above fuel filter, pulled them down, and found 2 chafed and broken wires,a red one,and a green with black stripe,so i spliced in a new piece of wire on each, now all dash lights are out,but still no speedo, and still hard shift(which will prolly be cured when speedo works)and flashing O/D light.now abs works and i didnt see any more bad wires, wht is next place to look? this has been buggin me for awhile, and iam runnin out of ideas here. any suggestions ?? thanks

the hard shifting has nothing to do with the speedo.
replace the tranny fluid and filter for that.
if u replaced the speeed sensor and still no speedo, its time for a new gauge cluster then.
its not that hard to install.

I disagree RSH. The 98 gets it's speedo signal and it's shift speed signal from the same sensor. Unfortunately for the OP, it's not the one in the diff.

There is a second sensor in the trans, called the Output-shaft Speed Sensor or OSS, that is what supplies the signal to your speedo and for shift timing. I'd try that one.

It should be attached to the rear of the trans case (or possibly in the T-case since your's is a 4x4) by one 8 or 10 mm bolt. Hopefully the pickup is bad and the tone ring didn't bite it.

ohhhh ok i read it was called a tranny speed sensor, and was on tranny, but couldnt find it,thought about transfer case but wasnt goin to do more tearin apart then i had to lol,no wonder the parts place couldnt find a tranny speed sensor.

i will take a peek at it again in morning for that sensor on tcase then. The guy who had truck before had it work when it wanted too, when it quit,he changed motor thinking that would fix it :P

Sometimes they are referred to as the trans speed sensor, but most parts catalogs use OSS. You really shouldn't have to do any "tearing" to get at it though.

good, i dont feel like rippin itall apart since i am driving it,i figured out a way to bypass that hard first shift, put it in second until od light starts flashing, but i know the red wire i fixed was to the rear speed sensor, anyone know what the green wire with the black stripe on it is for??
