'98 Specs?

The 8.8 was bundled with a payload package (and stil is) that added a couple hundred lbs GVWR and gave you the stouter axle.

I can't believe I saw a almost brand new F-150 with an 8.8 under it the other night.

my O6 F-150has the 8.8, with the V6, think the 4.6 v8 does 2, but the 5.4 has a sterling i believe, not shure though

The 5.4 does have the 10.25 axle, just like my SD does.. But I can't imagine them putting the 8.8 in a truck with the 4.6L.

But I guess they must be holding up.. I just can't see how they payload and towing can be so much higher.. Is that axle that stout?

quick google says the gen before my truck the 97-03 had the 8.8 for the 4.6, so i guess the 5.4 just got the nicer axle, also the 8.8 in the f-150 are the 31-spline version from my research, so they are a little stronger than the 28 spline under the ranger.

the 8.8 been tested behind just about everything, my donar 91 f-150 5.0 v8 had the 8.8 too, and the 4.0/v8 exploders have them, so they dont have a problem with the torque of the V8

Mustangs with the 4.6 have always had the 8.8 behind them, granted they are a lot lighter than a pickup truck.

My brother's 1997 F-150 with a 4.6 has a 8.8 at both ends, the front one being independant. My 2002 F-150 with a 5.4 has the same 8.8 in the front, and a Ford 9.75 in the rear. For my style of truck the 7700 package (or F-250LD) came with the 10.25, I assume the modern equivilant does as well with the lighter duty 5.4 trucks (the vast majority of them) still having the 9.75.

It is kind of annoying though, you can find all kinds of stuff for the 8.8 and 10.25, but the 9.75 doesn't have near the following since it isn't used as much.

the only thing i can say for sure is the 4x4 problem. the hubs are plastic and junk!!! if you can find some change them out for manuals. also check to see if the metal line going into the hub on the inside by the dust cover is rusted. this happened to mine. if not check all rubber lines to the vacume selinoid. if thats not it put a vacume pump on the meatl line going into the hub and check that it engages the hub and then disengages. last i checked in 2005 it was approximatly $1000 to buy both lockouts and wheelbearings that only came from ford at the time. the bearings and hubs work together as a sealed unit. this is why i say if you can find them get the manual lockouts. there was a tech artical i believe that told you how to turn the stock units to manuals. i had done this but ended up destroying the plastic anyways. mostly inpart because i was not nice to my ranger in anyway but i will say it never let me down. as far as the other problems its hard to say i never had any of them. hope this helps in some way

IIRC you got your hub issue fixed didn't you?

Good deal on the truck too, way to talk him down over the 4x4 being in-op!

Well, my alternator decided to pack it in yesterday... battery too.

More work on the truck, in the snow, in the dark...

Anybody got any ideas about the other issues I mention in the first post?
