I'm sorry if this is not the right place for this question but i am looking into buying a 98 ford Ranger 4x4 but it needs a new transmission. Around how much would it cost for a new transmission with installation. Thank you.

Manual or auto?

Most guys who have a bad auto rebuild it (upwards of $2500...)

Most guys who have a bad manual go to the junk yard ($500-$1000)

It has an auto now and I was thinking of getting another auto but I might go for a manual. So an auto would be a hell of a lot more expensive to replace.

im not sure about 2500. most re and re's are 800 to 1000 for a auto. normally they arent blown to small pieces.

If you want to go the boneyard route try a Pull a part auto. They are really cheap. They do have a garantee. As the name states, You pull out the parts, 4cyl motors are like $120 even if it is a new truck. Here is the link so you can see if there is a location close to you. http://www.pullapart.com/
Good luck :bye:

800-1000 would get you a a soft parts only rebuild from the lowest payed (least educated) employee at the shop.

Just as a reference I paid 2k for a rebuild on my '00. They had to replace the reverse and overdrive planetary gears because they had turned to chunks. That was over 3 years ago.
