Hi all, I have lurked for a long time and finally just registered. My truck is a 98 2.5 5 speed and i recently went to start it and it would die w/o revving the engine. (no cel ever) Well i changed the plugs and wires and all seemed great! I had more power than i've had in a long time. So i drive to work and when i get out the same problems are back. Tried to get home and within a mile of my house I threw the check engine light and there was black smoke coming out of the exhaust. I opened the hood and my exhaust headers were almost red, I also noticed a really strong odor of gas up front when i did this. Well i got it towed home and pulled the codes. Mass air flow sensor malfunction! I unplugged it and it ran great again! So i then clean the maf and still cant have the ranger on for more than 1 min w/o the manifold almost glowing cause its so hot. I pulled the cat off and check that, it looks 100% no carbon or anything. Check the plugs and all i smell is gas and they are BLACK. So my question is do you think my manifold is plugged from the engine not burning the fuel? Thanks for any advice I really need it. My old lady has been out of work due to medical reasons since jan. and we just had to leave our apt as our landlord was severely negligent with basic upkeep causing health issues. Needless to say i cant afford to take the ranger to a garage. So again any help is much much appreciated!

fuel pressure regulator failed causing fuel to go through the vacuum reference line, or an injector or two are stuck open, that's what I'd guess anyway
