1998 Ranger 4.0, 4x4 OHV blows Fuse 13 which is a 15amp at the Power Dist. Box under hood.

According to the manual downloaded from fords heres this -

Fuse13 15A* Heated Oxygen Sensor, EGR Vacuum
Regulator, EVR Solenoid, Camshaft Position
Sensor (CMP), Canister Vent Solenoid

I cant drive it 50 feet and it blows the fuse, it wont pull out of my drive hardly when fuse blows. runs and performs until fuse blows .

Someone help me please.

Unplug all of the components on that fuse and start it up. Then plug them in one by one, when the fuse pops you found your culprit.

So the fuse runs these 5 components -

Fuse13 15A* Heated Oxygen Sensor, EGR Vacuum
Regulator, EVR Solenoid, Camshaft Position
Sensor (CMP), Canister Vent Solenoid

If all these are unplugged at once, will it run ?

Should i be looking for a defective part or a shorted wire ??

It may not run with the cam sensor unplugged. Everything else should be ok.

Try it with the all of those unplugged. If it won't run plug the cam sensor back in.

It could be wiring or a bad component. If it pops with everything unplugged you need to look at wires. If it doesn't go right away start plugging things in and when the fuse blows replace the last part you plugged in.

Thanks, ok im tryin to locate each component.

The charcoal canister is by spare tire.
The oxygen sensors found.
These other 3 i dont know location - EGR Vacuum
Regulator, EVR Solenoid, Camshaft Position
Sensor (CMP)

someone point locations out for me ?

Dont blow fuse idling, just when moving. My driveway is a small incline and it blows fuse while coming up driveway..

i unhooked each component , 1st unhooked egr, and canister. Drove up driveway and fuse blowed.

So reconnected those two and unhooked both oxygen sensors. Drove up driveway, about a mile on highway. Fuse never blowed.

Reconnected oxygen sensors, test drove a few miles, Fuse still hasnt blowed(Yipee!!)
but i cant believe the problem is solved.
All wiring looks great, nothing bare.
Something in the plugs by unplugging and reconnecting u reckon ??

Blew. The past tense of blow is blew, not blowed.

It may have been dirt or something making a short circuit in the connectors.

i have driven it around 80 miles and fuse hasnt blown. wife went to her mothers about 3 miles and got ready to leave and fuse popped:annoyed:

Well I would suspect you have an issue in the wiring, probably somewhere near the O2 sensors since it seems to have improved for a while after you fussed with them.

I would check for a rubbed-through wire on both O2 sensor harnesses (yes, there are two 02 sensors--one upwind, or before, the catalytic convertor, and a second one downwind, after the catalytic convertor). More than likely, you've got a bare wire making ground contact that is overloading the circuit--in essence, a bare wire is causing a short.

This is going to sound compliacated, but what you have to do is trace the wires from both O2 sensors and find where the insulation on the wire is broken and replace it.

Well pals, ive spent all day and still no luck.

i have unhooked all components one at a time and fuse still blows.
So wasnt the O2 sensors after all.

Ive run out of fuses,so i used a small copper strand to bridge a blown fuse and i guess it was too heavy to burn into so it blew the 30 amp PCM fuse.

I cant find any wires naked but seems to be a shorted wire the way its acting.

I installed a 30 amp in place of the 15 and it blew.
I even unhooked wires from tranny. no luck.

Installed another 30amp, it hasnt blowed as yet. test drove a few miles.

All components but the CPS have been unplugged and it wont run with it unplugged.
So this should eliminate the components being shorted ?? and problem is probably a shorted wire ?? or could it be the PCM faulty ?? Im worn out and stumped !

It is not a good thing to replace a blown fuse with a larger one. Don't park in doors:D

Well Yipee !! problem solved. while my son was under the truck wiggling wires, i heard the fuse pop.
Installed another fuse and he wiggled the wires again and just so luckily he seen it arc under the cab at drivers door.
a small orange/blue wire rubbing between frame and cab.
Black tape fixer !!

When fixing wiring gremlins it is better to be lucky than good. :D

Cut solder and shrink tube for a permanent repair...
