:icon_cheers:Hi everybody, i have a 1998 ranger 3.0 5 speed 4x4 stepside and my transmission finally crapped out on me. The mechanic wants too much money for me to justify fixing it...however, i found a transmission for a 94 3.0 4x4 ranger and i was wondering if that would work in my truck....any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It should work, AFAIK.

Your speedo is driven by the VSS on the rear axle, so if the 93's M05D trans has a hole for a speed sensor, you'll need to have that hole filled with a speed sensor head, to keep the ATF fluid from spewing out.

98 may use a different slave than 93. Look that up on Rockauto and see. You'll want to install a new slave regardless.

You would be better off with a warranty repair work guarantee from a good faith shop then buying a used crap trans that you know nothing about or will last or cost you in the long run, Bro. Go to Ammco and see what they want for a rebuild or a good already rebuilt trans they can get for you. I used them once on my 76 427 El Camino with an automatic trans and drag pack. I had an issue coming home from the drag strip about 6 years ago and my tranny started to make a clunking and grinding noise. I can't rebuild a transmission (motors...yes) but not a transmission. I went to our local Ammco shop and they charged me $120 to make some adjustments that it needed and to flush out the trans and torque converter. It never let me down. That is all it needed and they did not rip me off. Just be careful buying used junk.
