98 ford ranger transmission

In my 1998 for Ranger 4x4 5 speed, The transmission will no longer shift. It only shifts while the car is not turned on. Any ideas? Slave cylinder? A whole new transmission?

what happens when you start the engine in gear?

i'm betting slave cylinder, did you check your fluid for the clutch?
