anyone know of a good how to on taking out the dash, or some simple tricks.

Remove the lower dash panels, remove the steering column, remove the side and upper dash panels, remove the a pillar covers and kick panels, unbolt the dash, most of the wire harness is long enough that you don't have to disconnect many wires. The Ranger dash is well made and easy to remove.

I used a Chiltons manual my frist go round with pulling a 95+ dash. Its stupid simple when you know where the bolts are. The radio and all stays in the dash unlike the stupid 94 and older which require open heart surgery to get all the wires and screws

Yes, I kinda wish I knew this before I started removing every screw and bolt from the 96...just five major bolts and a few minors would have gotten it removed on that year...so later I would hope would be as easy.

And try to keep anything you remove in a sealed container that is durable...mine leaked and when I finally got to finishing the dash in stall a year later the fasteners were rusty and it was hard remembering where everything went...

^That is the cluster..... Not the dash. The cluster stays in the dash
