Hey guys and gals.

I spent today rolling around in the dirt pulling the blown 3.0 and auto tranny from my 3.0 98 4x4. I'm headed down to WV in the morning to pickup a 4.0 SOHC from a wrecked 04 with 80K on the clock.

This will be my first near to factor swap I've done. I've done 5.0's in the past but that was way back when and I didn't care if the heat or the radio worked. This is going to be my daily, I want it nice.

I've done a good bit of research but one question still eludes me.

Does the body harness differ by motor configuration? i.e. Will the body harness on my 98 be compatible with the engine harness of the 04?

I will have access to anything I need but if I can avoid having to gut the interior and replace the wiring it would make my day much nicer and probably save the children of my neighborhood from hearing the stream of profanity that undoubtedly would stream from my garage when I get butchered on some invisible piece of metal hiding under the dash.

Lastly for bonus points. were there any configuration or layout changes between the 98's up to the later 4th gen rangers with respect to the climate control and the routing of the ac lines?

Thanks a bunch

I HIGHLY suggest getting the entire engine harness off the 4.0. It SHOULD plug right into the interior plug on the driverside of the engine, BUT, who knows if pins moved around and such.

I just swapped my '01 4.0 with a '06 4.0 and alot of the sensors are different, required me using half my '01 harness and half my '06 harness. '04 Ford did alot of different wiring to thetruck, but most the engine side is the same as older models. Infact, I think all the wire colors remained the same throughout the years. My best suggestion to you, is either hitting up ebay for a '98 electrical manual and a '04 electrical manual....or talk the local dealership into letting you make copys from their books. That way you can compare the plugs and the plug wires and such.

Dont forget you'll need a PCM.

Bonus points: sometime in '03, Ford changed the temperature door switch from a cable to a wire. I believe all the hose routing is all the same from previous years.

there's a guy over at Ranger-Forums that's swapping his '98-00 4.0L OHV to a 01+ 4.0L SOHC. Might take a peek over there.

Wow, thanks man! that was exactly what I needed to know. My plan as it stands is to get every last bloody wire off the donor truck.

As for the temp door switch, I'll have to compare I suppose and see if I'm going to need to get that too.

As much as I don't want to it seems that ripping the dash out is inevitable at this rate.

Now onward to figuring out how the hell to make the rabs vs 4wabs work out :)

Do you have a link to that?

You shouldn't have to mess with interior stuff at all, though I'm not positive. The interior stuff is different on the '04 than your 99 or whatever.

The only wiring you should need off the donor truck, is the entire engine harness(PCM plug, to the big plug on the driverside, then back on the trans). You do know you'll need a transmission right?

Do you have a link to that?

Let me look for it and I'll post a link later today.

EDIT: Found it faster than I thought!

Alright, I went and got the motor and all the goodies today.

A few problems that I foresee.
1. the body harness was totally different. Instead of a a bank of multi pin plugs on the drivers fire wall, there were two grommets in the firewall, one on each side for the harness.
2.This truck is power nothing, my truck is power everything.
3. the fuse block mounting location is completely different. It is mounted on the passengers kick panel area.

Aside from that the ac all looks fine. I snagged the xfer case just in case mine dose not play nice. I also grabbed every last electrical bit from the truck just in case.

I'm thinking at this point that if perhaps the body harness does nto matter to the motor I can keep my old harness and just drop the new motor and it;s harness and comp in.Of course I'm going to need some time going over the all data on both trucks to see if that is the case. Don't suppose anyone has the pinouts and diagrams on these do they? :) In the mean time, here is a couple pics of the donor and the patient waiting for its new heart.

Seriously, I would invest in a '98 and a '04 factory electrical manuals. It's got all the diagrams, all the component views, all the component locations, wire colors and what each does, etc. It's what the dealerships use.

Here's a few links to some...well worth the $50 tops investment to have them to compare and contrast.

Heads up...there's only one 2004 book listed on ebay right now.

You'll find things like this in them(which I used ALOT recently):

Here's the driverside plug I was talking about(what links the engine and PCM to the interior)...As you can see, every pin is movable.

Now I won't be able to help much in regards to PATS issues if you're truck has PATS or the donor PCM has pats, I honestly don't know. In regards to getting everything hooked up electrically and such. You may look into making a thread over at Ranger-Forums as well. There's a quite a few knowledgeable people in regards to these newer engine swaps there as well as here.
