I have a 2.5L from a 98 Ranger and a 2.3 from an 86 SVO. Curious if I can use either block or block/head combo in my 84 Ranger with the stock 84 carb and intake manifold. Also if either is more beneficial than the other. Thanks.

The easy way to go is to use the 86 svo 2.3.

The hard way, the 98 2.5 doesn't have a provision in the block for a distributor so if you wanted to use it you would need the computer, and the wiring from the 98.

If you can find a 89-94 2.3 block you could put the 2.5 crank, rods, and pistons in it to make it a 2.5, the 89-94 still have the hole in the block for the distributor (the 74-88 2.3, and 2.0's has bigger mains than the later 2.3's and 2.5's so you can't put the 2.5 crank in them).

It all depends on if you desperately need to swap engines.

I'd suggest doing the SVO motor and getting a stand alone wiring system for the EFI/ECU. That would be the easiest, and probably the best.

You can get a bearing spacer kit to enable you to put the 2.5 crank and rods in the 86 motor.Makes a nice torqey motor and is dependable.Get a 88-89 FI roller head and intake and put a 350 holley on it with a dist.Get a 93-97 tube header from a ranger.
