98 2.5 engine upgreads

just the problem is i go between cities a lot and 80 mph is the speed limit. so i want to still be able to hit that with out pushing my engine to hard. i was just thinking of doing the head till i get a bigger engine, but i just need to know what years to look at for the head

Pushing your engine too hard? You will actually help your engine by regearing, and improve fuel economy... I never use O/D on our 2.5 Ranger even on the interstate... My dad put 170,000 miles on it, 90% of those above 3000 rpm (75 mph O/D off) to and from Nashville every day... It's not my truck, but you can spend all that money for a tiny bit of power or regear and improve fuel economy, power, and be cheaper...

well my truck came with 20" tires and i put 23" tires on it. the problem is that i cant find out what rear end i have.i looked up the numbers and cant find anything. if anybody could help this is what was on my tag

S370M
373 75 8G14

thats a 3.73 geared open diff 7.5

Oh, yeah, definitely re-gear to at least 4.10:1... It would be soooo much better...

Since it's 2wd you can find an entire axle assembly in the junkyard with 4.10 ratio and just swap that in, more than likely alot cheaper too...

yeap what i did got me a complet axel from a 92 ranger with a 8.8 that had allreayd had the gear swapp done for 150 and took an hour to install it love the gears man ull love it with the 4.10s

Drop in a v-8 , engine swaps are fairly common for these..........

dont the 2.5 have more power than the 2.3?:icon_confused:

yea a bit more not that much, from aprox 100hp to 117 and 145 lbs of tq, not that much, in stock it moves decently, but maybe it needs more if u are adding weight
what is the mayor diference u guys with 4.10 feel since replacing the 3.73??
what rangers had the 4.10?? v6 models?? i guess the 7.5 didnt came with 4.10, so i must replace the whole axle?

Dude your 99 is identical to mine :icon_cheers:.

i know i can now use 5th gear and has alot more pull up grades and i even liked that help my fuel milage. had a ford tech friend cheack the gears put in new royal purple oil n was good to go. best bets to find a 8.8 from a 4.0 ranger with what ever gears it has n have em swapped .

mattpresley, really?? same color too? any pics?
hoss429, i use my 5th gear a lot, to cruise at 2k rpm, even in plain roads i can use it in the 1500 rpm , about 60kmh, i was thinking about the 4.10 to have more acceleration, to keep the pace with my bro's 3.0 lol!
