97 Ranger Starting and Idleing problem

I puchased a 97 Ranger 4x4 with 54K miles and a V6. Just recently it would not start without giving is some throttle. It may be once it is warmed up. I replaced the fuel filter and I thought I had it but nooooo. It is still going on. Any thoughts? Where is the hook up for checking the codes?
