So my speedometer in my 97 ranger dosnt always want to work right. what it will do is not work at all till i hit about 20-25 or so, then it kicks on, but is about 10 mph too slow (it says 35 im going 45). I replaced the VSS with a brand new one today, and it will still do the same thing. It dosnt always do it but id say 3/5 times it does. What else can i check to fix this?

Problem - "The speedometer on my '96 Ranger quits working sometimes."

Answer - From 1995-1997, check the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) on the transmission/transfercase. Could be bad.

Turn off vehicle and disconnect the VSS cable. Using a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM), measure the resistance (DVOM ohmmeter function) between the sensor terminals on the VSS (not the cable). If the resistance is 190-250 ohms, the sensor is okay.

Which VSS did you replace? If it was on top of the axle, that's just for ABS.
You should inspect its gear teeth too.

ya the one on top of the rear axle. So would it be the ones on the front wheels i need to check? thats what it looks like in the manual i just got.
