I am back to square one with this. I can't get some of the bellhousing to engine bolts to break loose. I have all the bolts but the tops 2 loose. I have an 810ft lb torque impact gun yet the bolts refuse to break loose. So is it possible to remove the engine and tranny as one unit? Other suggestions welcome. Thanks

It is possible, it is not fun. Is the trans hanging off of these things or is the crossmember still there? That extra stress can make it take a lot more torque to pop them loose.

It's been a while since I pulled mine...
IIRC, I believe you can jack the trans into the door, and get between the engine and firewall.

If needed it can be pulled with the trans.
This is a 2.5 2wd, but as you can see it requires some serious angle and lift to get it out.

Everything is still connnected ( motor mounts, cross member). In the process of pulling the heads off then try heating the top bolts. The tranny was rebuild about 6 months ago according to the PO. Doesn't look like loctite was used om the bolts. Just trying to figure out a way to get this engine out. Been at it off and on for a few weeks now amd ready to get it out and new engine back in. Oh yes, it's 2WD.

What kind of extension and swivel socket are you trying to use?

They make a transmission extension, its 1/2" drive and super thick all the way to the end, where it has a 3/8" drive.

Those work very well with 3/8" shallow impact swivel sockets.

I haven't had such an issue since I invested in those tools. Regular extensions flex too much, and absorb the impact of your gun.

Urban where did u find your extension? I have a 5 foot 3/8 extension with a shallow impact wobble socket. Thanks

you could remove the header panel and the rad support and then pull the motor out then you wouldnt have to pull the engine and trans out at such an extreme angle. thats atleast what i did

My Matco Tools dealer sold em to me, Crap-on also sells them. They range from $45-$150 each depending on length, 6"-6'.

You might find some cheaper somewhere, I make a living with my tools and don't buy cheap junk.

Update: Got the old engine out and have the new engine sitting in the engine bay and connected to the tranny with all the engine to tranny bolts tighten. Hopefully, tomorrow we will get everything else connected and get a chance to fire that baby up! By the way a cheap set of swivel sockets from Harbor Freight and a cheap 1/2" set of extensions from Northern Tool made it all possible. Thanks to those who gave advice to help me!!!
