98' ranger 2.5L noisy lifters

I have a 98 ranger 2.5L with 145000 miles on it. The motor runs great and doesn't use any oil. When I start it there is a loud ticking sound. It almost sounds like an old diesel. It seems to go away after it gets warmed up though, which makes me think its in the head. I'm not sure though if it is the lifters or something else. I was told its common for these motors to have a tick. If it is in the head does anyone offer a performance head for the 2.5L. I would like to squeeze a little more power out of the motor if its worth the money. Possible V8 swap down the road.
