Hello my name is Ariel, i have a 97' Ford ranger with a 04' engine in it, its a 3.0L V6, 2WD and lifted. I have one issue with my truck i just recently bought it so im a first time owner of a Ford truck. My issue with the truck its when i accelerate there is a ticking from the engine. I have no idea what it could be or what may be the cause of it. If anyone knows what it could be, or what the cause of it may be please let me know. I want to know if its something that could be a major problem in the future. Thanks for your time! :)

Ahh the tick,
Depending on where it's coming from could be anything really
Best to get some one inside parked and rev it up. Get ur head under the hood and listen...
Could be an exhaust leak..
Could be f'd lifters, who knows
If its only when ur driving prob is a wheel bearing, but more or a rubbing/grinding
Pin point where exactly it coming from then let us know where..
Good luck!

I'd also check to see if anyone stuck a zip tie on the driveshaft... always a fun trick....

Could be oil related too if it's the lifters making noise. Usually the 3.0L is pretty quiet but the 2.9L was infamous for a lifter tick. Not much you could do about it neither on those, best you could try with those was to run 5w-30 with a quality filter (like a Motorcraft) and dump a cup (1/2 pint or 1/4 quart) of ATF in with the oil for a couple changes to see if it would clean some of the sludge out (often you would then find that your valve covers would be leaking, another thing the 2.9L was infamous for).

If it's lifters ticking, I'd say try changing the oil and adding some ATF to clean things out a bit. Other than that, we may need more information.

Thanks guys for the reply, yea im not sure exactly what it could be im going to have to take a closer look. Ill try that ATF an see if that helps, if not ill have to look more into it. Thanks again an ill be getting back to you on more information on what is the cause. :)

It could be a a few of issues. Motor area, trans area. It would be best to take it to a shop to make sure it is not going to leave you stranded somewhere. Without hearing where the ticking noise is coming from and what it sounds like we really can't tell you what it is. And...it might not be anything to worry about either. But...take it to a shop.
