97 2.3L 4cyl, need tune up suggestions!

Im a 97 ford ranger manual 2.3L or 2.5L (have to make sure) 4cyl pickup, 2WD. Not much power to this baby, so I was wondering what the easiest way to supe/tune it up!

I would probably start with new plugs and plug wires. And maybe a new fuel filter.

I was thinking about doing that but i would like to see if i could just find parts for a tune up first.

maybe a K&N air filter. Or in your year range, maybe a K&N cold air intake. But a K&N filter in the stock filter box (like I have on mine, since there aren't any cold air intakes for 93-94's) will do, if you don't want to shell out more money.

intake will give you a 2-3 hp boost at max. electric super chargers are a totall waste. dont bother with them. they wont give you any power. and a chip wont do a whole lot. its more for tuning, and upgrades later. all it really does is "trick" the ecm.

i would do intake, exhaust, ngk spark plugs. ignition box. header, and some wires.

thatll gain you about 15 horse. these 4 bangers arent for horsepower. there just reliable tough engines.

could always do what i do. make a cold air intake outta 3'' pvc pipe with a cone filter on the end.

gotta love the $10.00 home depot intake.

going to accel coil packs isn't going to increase the power, the stock ignition system is plenty.

header won't gain you much either, the stock manifold is a decent setup.

getting rid of the air muffler in the intake should get you a little more grunt on the top end though, it will make it a little louder but you probably don't care... the stock air filter is the same as on a 4.0L, so it's not as restrictive as you would think if it can flow nearly twice the air a 2.3L needs...

if you think you need a less restrictive intake, get a vacuum gage and plumb it up to the engine, drive down the highway and floor it, the gage should point directly at 0, if you are still at a couple inches of vacuum then you are being restricted.

I'm running a turbo 2.3 through the stock intake plumbing and exhaust system (including cat), sure it's not the optimum setup, but it runs fine most of the time...

As the Great coach Bill Belichick says "it is what it is" put some good plugs and wires on it ie. Motorcraft change the fuel filter, clean the maf if you have one, new airfilter, check or change your tranny and dif fluids, make sure the tstat is working properly run some techron thru it and drive it around. remember. "you ain't runnin a speedboat"

the best way to get power out of these things is to run them at higher rpm's, the power band is 3000rpm and above, it'll run all day at 6000rpm and not bat an eye. you have a manual transmission, stay down a gear from where you usually cruise, it makes them a lot more fun to drive...
