96 to 98 3.0 auto trans, are they compatible ?

got a 98 two wheel drive 3.0 that needs a auto tranny, got a 96 4x4 3.0 with an auto tranny , will it work?

I've got a 98 3.0 w/ auto and just rebuilt it. The tail piece is different and will have to be swapped but I honestly don't know how compatible. The 4R44E and 4R55E look the same as I recall but the later has extra gears on the planetary and is not normally on a 3.0. I can't believe how much I have forgotten about this and just installed it two months ago. Check the tag on the tail piece to identify. Actually the biggest pain was the 9 broken exhaust bolts (2 on the collector, 4 on the manifolds, and 3 in the heads).
