so the past few weeks ive been extremely busy building up my 96 2wd splash. it started life as a 2.3.. yeah it got ya around but ive wanted to either turbo charge the 2.3 or find a different motor. so the 4 liter poped up an thats the route i went. so i got a extremely good deal on a 92 explorer 2WD. had 80k on it. so i picked it up an pulled motor/tranny out of it for the SPLASH! a few weekends an a LOT of help from friends (matt) holyford86 an (Tim) metalmacguyver and (Dave) smallfarm123 i was able to build up a 4 liter engine that is obd II compliant for the splash. with these fellas i appreciate all the help you have lent me!

the banana!

we then tore it all down an CLEANED it up a bit an replaced gaskets an added the newer intake, lower intake, and manifolds to it.

so we used a 92 lower end and heads, gathered parts for a 96 obd2 ranger. got an egr tube an egr off an explorer, made a hybrid 2.3/4.0 master cylinder, added the 4x4 tranny cross member.. and we get the truck to run decent!! cant complain with that.

still have some bugs o work out.. need to find a manual tranny computer an fix the number 4 cylinder not firing due to a faulty fuel injector. over all its been a fun build. i cant wait to get out an drive it on the pavement!

nice work. that looks like it turned out really good. I have to say though, you got the old 2.3 sounding pretty good.

nice truck bro, you guys did a great job, probably one of the best or the best 2wd splash ive ever seen

nice! can you turbo a 2.3? been wondering that for a while now

you can turbo any engine you want.

and it just happens that the 2.3 was available with a turbo from the factory.

Sadly though, it wasnt in a ranger.

Nice truck!

I'm no fan of yellow, but that's just me!

its the same block, head, and crank. the turbo motors got forged pistons, but you can boost on your stock pistons if you want.

that depends on a lot of factors. a stock non-turbo 2.3 can generally handle around 8 PSI without a problem, but 2 PSI is enough to smoke a motor if you dont tune it properly.

look around, this has all been covered.

No problems running the older style heads with the newer management?
