Hello. I have heard this is a great site. Thanks for having me come aboard. I installed a new timing belt on my Ranger and all the pulley marks lined up so I thought. The old belt broke while I was driving it and I was told this is not an interference engine. It won't start with the new belt and seems to roll over like the belt is still broken. I am confused regarding the crank pulley mark. I set the mark to TC according to the timing belt cover, my guess maybe 2 o'clock. (Notch line on crank pulley to mark on timing belt cover ) Should I have set it to BTC which would be 12 o'clock? Thanks.

There are 2 marks on the cam and aux sprockets. Verify you used the right ones by matching the mark on the inner timing cover

It's highly likely that your belt is one tooth off of adjustment.

It happens when you put the timing belt on without putting the slack where it needs to be.

Before putting everything back on front of the engine, take a breaker bar with a socket to the crank bolt and turn the crankshaft TWO full turns. If after two turns the crank and camshaft alignment marks don't line up, then you're belt is off by one tooth.

Its possible I'm off a tooth but do I use the BTC mark on the crankshaft pulley or the TC mark. The TC mark is notched on the exterior of the plastic timing belt cover which is what I aligned.

I have coil packs not a distributor if this matters. Aux sprocket? I have Cam, Oil pump and Crank shaft to align. The marks appeared to be right on after two full rotations. Could it be the crank sensor? If not then I must be off a tooth.

Aux sprocket & Oil Pump are the same thing, 1994+ California and ALL 1995 and newer 2.3/2.5 Lima's have a camshaft position sensor on the Aux sprocket.

You would use the TC (Top Center) mark. The cam and oil pump sprockets have a triangle and diamond on them. You have to use the correct timing mark, the correct mark is on the inner timing cover in the shape of a triangle or diamond
