96' 158k "chipped" exhaust valve

my truck started smoking badly, so first i pulled all the plugs 5 of the plugs looked great. but the plug in cylinder number 4 was oil covered and black. so i ran compression on that cylinder and had 0 compression. so i pulled the head to find the exhaust valve on that cylinder had a 1/4" chunk missing. my question: was this causing my smoking issue? or could it be something less obvious?
