Back story: Picked this truck up less than a year ago as a DD and eventual project once i get some financial backing. The truck has had a miss for quite some time. I replaced the filters (air and fuel), plugs wires (verified proper wire order and what not), even replaced the coil packs. Basic tune up things. Still has a miss to it. The truck is a 1995 xlt 2wd manual trans w/ 170K on the odo.

I went out to replace the radio with a new one. The original radio works fine, but when is the last time you saw a cassette tape? ANYWAY i pulled the radio and noticed some cut wires on a box on the left next to the gauge cluster. I attached a picture. It looks pretty ghetto. The yellow wire is hot glued and twisted together :annoyed:

Can anyone identify these wires? Why would this be done? How can i fix this mess?

Thats the GEM module, it works various components throughout the truck, but does not affect the ignition portion of the truck...

SVT

Provide the wire colors and/or connector pin#'s and someone could tell you exactly what those GEM wires are for.

One of the easy things to eliminate is EGR, when trying to resolve a light pedal, steady speed judder. Just take off the EGR vacuum line and drive it. If it quits "missing" it could be a bad DPFE.

Are those three wires coming from a larger plug, or are those the only wires in that plug? I can't see the pic very well.

I managed a better picture once i unplugged it. While unplugged from the GEM I started it up. Still has a miss to it... The only thing that changed was that the wipers and washer quit working. I plugged it back in and the wipers started working again.

I'd still like to know what those clipped wires go to. Maybe solve the miss at idle and pinging at high rpm issue.

If you can't tell, the cut wires are tan/yellow & grey/yellow

GY/YE looks like Hot in Run power, also called Ignition.
Does your Charge Indicator light come on when you turn the key to Run, engine off?

TN/YE looks like the tachometer signal wire. 4 bangers didn't typically have a tach in the dash.

Edit: TN/YE is also delivering tach signal to the PCM on pin 48 (using a 2000 schematic for that info, might be wrong).

Or to Pin 4, according to http://www.therangerstation.com/tec...les/Diagram_ElectronicEngControls2_3_2of3.JPG

http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/instrument_cluster_wires.htm < source.

Tell us what else doesn't work in your truck, such as:

Seatbelt lamp in dash
seatbelt warning buzzer
door ajar lamp in dash
key in ignition with door open buzzer
lights on with key removed dinger/buzzer
dome light
etc

Why can't you simply reconnect the cut wires?

I would be concerned with the ends of the wires that got cut, shorting to something.
Tape the cut ends of the chassis side of wires, not worrying much about what is hanging out of the GEM connector, but tape them too.
If the tach signal were getting corrupted, it might affect its running.
