i scored a plastic upper intake, fuel rail, and spacer from a 95 explorer at the yard this weekend. i want to possibly do some part swapping with what i have on the 93 4.0 which is all stock parts for that year.

i remember seeing a post (correct me if i am wrong, but AllenD) about warm start issues when the weather turns warm in the spring. something about some component of fuel vaporizing out as the heat from a warmed up, shut off motor rises into the fuel rail. when you go to start the truck, it wants to stumble and idle poorly for a few minutes. more annoying that anything else on an older vehicle- however, i did get the most important part it seems with the spacer bushing.

now, can i just swap in that spacer and use the existing fuel rail and upper intake? i ask because the motor the parts came from had EGR where my 4.0 does not. it will require more fabricating to use that plastic intake.

also, does anyone have the part number for the good ford intake gasket? the rebuilt 4.0 came with a felpro kit and i didn't know at the time of assembly that those felpro lower intake gasket suck, so if i am going to do any of this, i'm going to do it all.

You CAN use your exsisting upper intake but you must have the
LOWER intake from the 1995 to use the fuel rail and spacer.

...what...

are the bolt holes machined different or something?

so the only combo that works is 93 block, 95 lower, 95 spacer, 95 fuel rail, 93 upper intake?

Ok, the injectors are retained in the intake manifold by being held down
by the fuel rail, what exactly do you think would happen if you suddenly
raised the fuel rail by the 8mm thickness of the isolator/spacer without
changing the lower intake?

The mating surface on the lower intake is lower to accomodate the thickness of the spacer.

Simply installing the spacer would cause a massive fuel leak after
one or more injectors blew out of the underside of the fuel rail

The later studs are necissary for the length of the lower end,
but other than having to run the nuts down a longer stud
they will work with the aluminum upper intake.

I'd still add a thick washer to them though...

I can't see any difference in the fuel rail itself
even through close examination.

To use the spacer you must use the '95- lower intake
and studs/bolts

which block/heads you use it on is irrelevant.

makes total sense, i will see whats left at the yard tomorrow morning.

i was definitely curious about the fuel rail as i dinged the threads on one of the connectors, so whats swappable is good to know (even though its fairly obvious now...). Thanks!

got me a 96 lower , fuel rail ,injectors , spacer, pressure reg, and fuel ines all goin on the 90 4.0=]=]=] they however didnt have a plastic plenum dam =[

i never made it back to try for the lower intake. ive got serious detonation issues i need to figure out before worrying about other things. its fustrating as hell because i have to much i want to do to the truck like these mods on the intake, but if its not running right, whats the point of modding...:annoyed:

I wouldn't worry (much) about swapping the upper plenium

The important thing is thermally isolating the fuel rail from the lower intake.

I suppose having a thermally non-conductive upper would prevent it from either warming the incomming charge, because it will pick up heat from the ambient air in the engine bay, much of which passed through the radiator...

I suspect the later upper intake does flow better but plugging that EGR
port wouldn't be too difficult.
and either changing the plug to the ACT sensor OR running a ground
wire to your original sensor (not even sure it's necissary) shouldn't
be too difficult either.

i was back at the yard today, the last dang row, last RBV had what i needed in the intake assembly, so i got to work and got the whole assembly from lower to the fuel rails, so essentially i have the whole intake.

are the throttle bodies, and electronics swappable between the two, like can i just put the 95 upper intake in and connect up what needs connecting, or will more swapping be needed?

also, i have the whole lower assembly soaking in the wash tub right now, hopefully thats ok? i wont ruin gaskets or anything?

and lastly, anything in particular need swapping on the lower assembly?

i have to tear the engine down to the block, so now is the perfect time for me to fit this swap in. i am sure i can figure out things once i get going, but it would be great to get some tips in advance!

You really want to keep your '93 sensors.

I doubt that running the plastic intake will gain you much (if anything)
but that's something that you could expirement with later, because
using it increases the complication with the ACT sensor....

The TB and throttle cable is the same.

I'm not at all sure about the Throttle position sensor.

I'll check on that myself and get back to you.

right on.

my original plan was to put the aluminum intake back on, but i guess i am just exploring options, so whatever combo pans out would be fine. i guess really, the thing i am most curious about is this lower intake assembly. if its a direct swap, then i will clean it up and slap the mo-fo right in there.

hahahahahahahahaha thats funny i almost got taken by that too but i tripple checked

well since you brought this one back up, i did go back for a third friggin time. there was a ranger 5 trucks down that was a later model. it turns out was a 98. i payed close attention, saw a spacer and got to work only to find out the intake design is different. the rear coolant jackets were sealed off.

some lucky SOB is getting parts easy off these motors after i get through stripping them to the heads. i'll be going back this Friday for other parts but i'll be keeping my eyes open none the less for an intake...i am getting good at breaking these motors down, too bad OHV motors are turning into relics.
