Have never really took mental note of my 95's dash lights...I do have the Oil Pressure Gauge which always reads "normal" even though when my intake gasket went it was about 2.5 quarts low! Do 4.0L Rangers have EITHER the gauge or the light, or do some have both, my Chilton's is showing both...??? I can only find the gauge switch...

As soon as the sending unit sees 7psi the gauge reads normal. So yes, it is just to make you feel better.

The gauge you have tells you all you NEED to know! It tells you that you have enough oil pressure to make the engine run as designed. It also takes the worry out of "is my pressure to low?" Millions and millions of these gauges are providing sanity for their drivers. Leave it alone and you will be Ok.

Replaced the sending unit/switch...have NO pressure until engine runs for 5 minutes... Have NEVER had any trouble like this before, how can I tell if my pickup screen is clogged, I know I cannot remove the pan while the mtoor is in, right?

5 minutea?

It isn't likely that you have run that egine without oil pressure for five minutes!
It is highly likely the problem is with the sender or the gauge or the wireing inbetween. Five minutes without oil pressure would destroy almost any engine. Your engine is toast or the pressure simply isn't being read correctly.
Are you sure and certain you put the correct sender on there? Or is the new one faulty from the factory?
Swap it out and get another brand.. from another parts house.

The rangers have a dummy gauge, and oil light.
mine only has the dummy guage? Theres a "check guage" spelled "check gage" for some reason)...but its hard as hell to see in daylight, and honestly wouldnt even notice if it came on. It also comes on if the temp goes too high or your almost out of gas. I like the jeep cherokees setup becuase the check guage light is very visable and flashes and theres a tone if the oil press goes too low/temp too high. This way theres no way you would miss that going off unless you wanted to damage the engine.

im inclined to agree becuase im one to get paranoid if the oil pressure even seems low. Though the dummy guage will let you run the engine to failure if for any reason (coolant in oil, clogged filter etc) you had low oil pressure at high rpms. only 7-15 psi will cook an engine pretty quick at driving rpms if it went unchecked.
