'95 2.3L. Fuel pouring out top of tank


got the bed off, found the gas leak

Got the bed off myself, worked a side at a time. The outside big hose is split where it attaches to the tank, but the inner hose is fine. The leak is a fine spray where one of the two metal lines coming out of the tank attaches to the round plate. It leaked when the key is on, but I guess it took a while to drip down to where I could see it before. Luckily, I had ordered a new pump and screen, I think it's called Autotex. Also got a filter, and new bolts for the bed. Got the hex headed ones. The Torx bolts came right out for me, even the one I couldn't get CB on. It was the easiest, actually. The whole frame has about a 1/16" of separated (rusted) metal on the surface, which comes off when rapped with a hammer or claw. Thought I'd knock it all off, sand, prime and prime again. Maybe I can put some lights under there like Mexicans do, turn the road purple under the truck. Just kidding.

So this is progress.

Now I got to read my book and these messages to see what tools I need to undo those lines at the round plate on top of the tank.
 
Sounds like your return fuel line is leaking...but it could be the pump in the tank...but you can secure those lines now that you know where it was coming from...

As for lights...lol...I painted my frame rails bright yellow (rust paint, of course)...and it sure is brighter under there...
 
really, if you are pulling the bed there is no reason whatsoever to drain any fuel out of the tank. top of the tank there is a threaded ring (big and white) this retains the fuel pump module in the tank. disconnect the lines and electrical connectors, unscrew the ring and slowly remove the module from the tank. be careful here, because the fuel level sender is also part of this assembly and can be a bit fragile. once you have it out you can replace just the pump and sock or the whole module. as a professional i would have to recommend the whole unit. just because Ive seen enough vehicles come back a week later with inaccurate or inop level sensors.

the install is just the opposite of disassembly.

Once I got the fuel pump assembly out of the tank, I could see a bunch of little copper wire bits in there, and then when I was removing the fittings from the supply and return pipes, I dropped a piece of pipe in there as well. So I'll drain the tank in order to go in there with my hand and a rag, to wipe up all those little bits of crap in there.
