My credo
Built not bought
Well I'm in the middle of some major mods for my 94 xlt xcab and one of them is doing the 95-97 brake upgrade . Well I got the knuckles and calipers off a 96 single cab with out rotors . I forgot to measure the rotor size :/ . Now I'm tryin to find rotors and don't know what size I need to go with . It's non abs for sure in the front on my truck and the single cab also no abs in front . all I see so far is abs for those years . Any insight would be great . Others wise I'm going to be guessing . I read some where that the single cabs have smaller rotors or a braking system compared to x-cabs , is that true ? I'm going to keep digging but in the search on tapatalk it repEats it's thread after a few scrolls

Side note my djm 3/4 kit should be here in the next few days :) I have a build bread in the mini truck part of the forums . Thanks again guys

Mike

When I replaced the rotors on my Ranger a while back I noticed it had an ABS tone ring on it, I don't have front ABS either. Replacement ones didn't have the tone ring, never bothered switching it over.

I never knew there were different size rotors. Does the part store list the size options?

Worst case scenario, buy a pair. If they don't fit, take them back and get the other ones. Just in case, make sure they offer a refund or exchange first on the rotors (since I don't know what parts store you're buying from)

Well went ahead and ordered everything I need (bearing , wheel seals , rotors, ceramic pads . I work at Aamco transmissions so swapping out parts isn't a problem . I'll post up my own experience of the upgrade in a few days . I've been wanting to do this for awhile now . Have had two pins fall out on there own driving so it's diffidently a needed upgrade .

Should I have got the lines from the yard to cause I got everything bolted up expect the damn lines they don't want to bolt up . Now I did just complete a dream beam install also . I went ahead and put the wheels on and got it on the ground to see how it looked . So I may try and reach up there behind the wheels and see if the will bolt up .

My solution for this is pretty simple--take the make/model/year/submodel to a parts store, and simply get those parts, as the upgrade parts fit on the same year steering knuckle. It doesn't matter, in this case, what year the rest of the truck is. As for ABS, I wouldn't worry about it. The "tone ring" is actually put on the rotor because, IIRC, 4-wheel ABS started being used on '98+ Rangers, and they didn't change the rotor size; this means that a 98+ rotor COULD fit, but would be a bad idea to actually do, as you should always get parts for the same year as the parts you're replacing.

AllanD can help you with the brake line issue:

The Original post is nearly two years old and you are the first one to spot that particular typo.

Swapping the entire '83-88 beam off for a '95-97 beam will work
on any '83-88 2wd.

The '89-94 use the later balljoint setup.

'95-97 use the twin pot caliper

what your you have determines which stock brake lines you will need

'83-88 use a -block for the front brakes.
this T-block is mounted to the top flange of the frame just behind
the engine crossmember.
And from there seperate metal lines run to each of the front brake hoses.
Granted the left side metal line is only 10" long or so...

on an '89-94 there is no "T-block" the line from the master cylinder runs directly to the left side hose because the top of the hose is the T-block and the metal line runs from there to the passenger side hose.

But there's a neat trick that sidesteps this complication...

Ford made some '95-97 2wd's with FOUR-WHEEL-ABS.

So on an '83-88 you just get the Drivers side hose for an 4wABS truck
For an '89-94 you get the NON-ABS hose

the passenger side hose is the same in either case.

On my Ranger I revised the metal lines to the '89-up pattern and replumbed all the hard lines in stainless steel (So I'll NEVER have to do it again)

So I'm using the NON-ABS hose.

The rub is that my truck is a 4x4 and they only made non-4wABS trucks in 1997, so if you were working on doing this upgrade on a 4x4 and you didn't have ABS you would get a drivers side hose for a 1997 4x4 WITHOUT 4WABS

Is that all pretty clear now?

Sorry for the previous confusion.

Since you also need the second design I-beams it makes no sense whatsoever to take anything off an '89-94

Get all your parts off of a 1995-97, beams, knuckles, caliper brackets and calipers.

If someone already robbed the calipers and/or caliper brackets don't panic, these parts are the same on Torsion bar SLA Explorers and Rangers through the end of 2003

I would HIGHLY recommend retaining your original Radius arms.
The welded stud lower shock mount on the later radius arms simply sucks compared to the through bolt and brace bracket of the '83-88 part.

I ended up going with the tech library extended raybestos lines and tee fitting . Rangers at the alignment shop down the street from my shop . Brakes worked great on the way there . No pulsing and no more pumping brakes like a old school lol
