94 ranger problem

so i have a 94 ranger xlt 3.0 and lately ill go to start it and it will have a really rough idle and some times it will just shut right back off but will start right back up with no problems. and my other problem is ill be driving and stop at a stop light and the truck will just shut off like its not getting fuel and the fuel pump will not kick in until i pop the hood and give the relay a few good smacks.

I'd say change the relay then.

As for the other problem, my first thought is of a vacuum leak. Assuming it isn't caused by the relay problem too somehow.

Try some De-Oxit contact cleaner on the relay socket too

ive changed the relay twice and it still hasnt fixed anything

Check the socket that the relay plugs into.

Also suspect would be the wiring going into the socket.

Did you get the right relay ? There are all kinds of mini relays

im not sure i just asked for the fuel pump relay and they gave me what they said was it and it worked but i was still having the shut off problem

Well, since it is intermittent, I would start troubleshooting. There is a ton of information and wiring diagrams on this forum to help you.

If banging on the relay/relay box fixes the problem, I would suggest an intermittent open (wiring/connector problem) between the relay power source and the fuel pump somewhere around the relay box.....

Like txgocartB3000 suggested by banging on the relay you reconnect the relay to the fuel pump and it works until vibration or whatever disconnects it again.
