94 Ranger 5-Speed Trans ?

Hi all,

I have a 94 Ranger X-Cab XLT with the 4.0. A few days ago the trans started to make a whine noise, then 2 or 3 days later it just died. Costed it to the side of the road. The the trans started to make grinding noise. When I push in the clutch the noise would go away. When I put it in 1st and let off the clutch it moved but smoke came out (lots of it) from the passenger side by the very back of the cab. I'm thinking it blow so kind of seal or something.

What do y'all think? A new trans?

Manual transmissions don't usually smoke. Much less "lots"

If the trans is throwing lube on the exhaust is surly will smoke!!!!

Well like I said it was making this kind of rattle noise but when I pushed the clutch in it would be dead quite, we thought the motor stop in fact.

Will a 95 4x4 tans work in a 94 2wd?

Not without a fair amount of work. You'd need to fully disassemble both transmissions, and install The output shaft,and tail cone from the 2wd transmission into the 4wd one

1990 to 2012 2WD trans(M5OD-R1) from a 4.0l OHV or 4.0l SOHC will work
1988-1992 from a 2WD 2.9l will also work.

4WD trans won't

You can put a 4x4 trans in a 2wd truck IF
You also install the transfer case and the REAR driveshaft with it...

Then it was the throw out bearing, and maybe the throw out bearing threw it's bearings. Lol.

88 5 speed stuck in gear

I have an 88 ranger 4x4. Driving home tonight it stuck in 4th gear. Is it best just to replace the tyranny or is there a quick fix

Happened to the Rat. My mechanic said it wasn't the first Ranger he had seen this in. The shifter fork let go and dropped pieces into the gears, something else cracked the case and dumped Mercon onto the hot exhaust. It only worked in 4th because it is direct . Trans was junk.
