94 ranger 4x4 transmission slipping.

Hey everyone I could really use some help getting my ranger going it's a 94 4.0L 4x4 with an automatic trans. But anyway when I put it in gear and go to drive it just revs up, but if I rev it up and let off the gas then try it will work. Then when I stop it does it again I have a feeling it's a pump or something, but im not sure. I don't want to spend a whole lot of money at a transmission shop. So any help would be great, Thanks!

first let me ask you the obvious...

Have you checked the fluid level?

Yes the oil was filled to the line. I changed it and there was no metal in the oil it was a bit dark though. But it's filled and still does it.

I found the problem it was a bad modulator valve on the automatic transmission replaced the part an it works great!
