Having some issues with a 94 Pontiac Grand Prix. Approx 140k on the clock. 3.1 v 6 4 dr.

It quite running as it was going down the road, in the final minutes prior to this no run situation.

The 1st thing that was noticed was the turn signals would not work,{ strange considering we just had the turn signal switch and wand replaced about a year ago , with new}.

Next there was various dash lights going on and off intermittently, for example, check engine light, speed-o jumping up and down to name a couple. Also there was a general fade of power.

Wouldn’t restart, just acted like a dead battery, serpentine belt is in tact and battery shows 12.5v present at the post with the cables removed. {Oh yes new battery about a year ago as well, Interstate}

Now, if we try jumping it, it restarts like a dream, runs fine until one removes the jumper cables then it slowly dies again with in a minute or 2.

The first consideration was that the ECM was doing a death dance. AND this still maybe…but if that was the case why would it start and run well with jumper cables attached??

Got the alternator off and in the process of getting it checked…but if it was the alternator why would it still have 12+ volt in the battery???

Is there a ground wire somewhere that should be checked?? Or a connection??

thanks in advanced

Sounds like a dead altenator. Disconnect the battery, and slow charge it 5 amps or less, for a total day. That way you don't cook the new alt.

Yeap that is where we're headed. had the alternator tested and it was showing that it could full load test just under 12v., should be closer to 13-14v SO we Just replaced it.

fortunately it was just the alternator that took the dumper, was concerned for a time that it might of taken the battery with it.

just arm wrestling with the tow company about bending the trailing arm and repercussions from that which now include the need of realignment after repairing that trailing arm.

Ugh
